Potty Training Tips For Boys

Potty training tips for boys are sought after because potty training boys is generally a little harder than potty training girls. Little boys have the added complication of seeing men wee standing up yet with a potty they are expecting to sit down.

This can understandably cause some confusion and frustration on both their part and your part! Let's bring on the potty training tips for boys and if you have some more, then we'd love to hear them!

Potty Training Tips For Boys

  • When your little boy sits on the potty he will need to check that his penis (or whatever word you use with him) is pointing INTO the potty! This is a big thing to learn and you need to tell him. Just sitting down and looking around will end up with a wet leg or a wet floor (okay then, both....)

  • "To wipe or not to wipe..." Lots of boys and men don't wipe their penis after they wee but some do. If your toddler has seen his Mummy use toilet paper they might want to too. And also he might not want any drips afterwards, so you need to be clear. He need to wait until the wee and drips stop, then shake their penis a little to get rid of any last little drops. If your toddler then wants to wipe he can (never refuse - let him decide).

  • Choose great pull-ups and training pants to encourage him in his learning. You can get Disney car pull-ups and all sorts of popular boy characters. Make the most of the merchandise because it will increase your son's interest in potty training.

  • Decorate his potty with his favorite character stickers and personalise his potty. Often ownership will mean that he wants to use it more.

  • If your boy is happy to sit on the potty or toilet rather than stand, then simply let him sit. Do not push him to stand because there is no need - over time he will see other boys standing to do a wee and he will want to try it too.

  • When your little boy does want to stand to urinate then this requires him to learn new skills and he'll need to do it in the toilet. Standing to wee into a little potty bowl is very likely to miss and at best, splash. Your toddler will need to be happy to use the toilet and a step.

  • The best tip for how to potty train boys is to involve Daddy or another prominent male figure as much as possible. Little boys generally long to be big boys and they will want to copy them.

  • Your toddler will first need to put the toilet seat up - another skill to learn. Be sure to keep the toilet really clean so that your toddler is happy to lift the sit up.

  • Your boy will need to stand right next to the toilet bowl so that he can get the flow of urine going into the bowl plus most of the drips. Some parents sit their boys on the toilet seat facing the back so that his penis is already over the bowl of the toilet. Then your toddler only needs to pratice aiming. This works for some but as your toddler hasn't seen anyone else do this (usually the case) then it might not work for everyone. See how it goes and keep it as an option.

  • Your toddler will need to direct the flow of the urine into the toilet and keep it going in the right direction. This requires concentration and patience on his part. You can put a piece of toilet paper in the water for him to aim at or you can buy specific flushable targets which could be fun.
  • At night time encourage your boy to sit on the toilet to urinate - standing to urinate at night when you'll sleepy and not with it is far more likely to end up with wee on the floor. Encourage him to sit far back on the seat with his penis pointing down right into the toilet bowl.

  • It'll take practice and there will be misses so make sure you have lino around the toilet bowl so it's easy to clean. If you have carpet in the bathroom you'll really need a waterproof toilet mat (plastic of possible, definitely washable).

Good luck!
