Toddler Bed Wetting
Toddler bed wetting is very common and the causes of most toddler bedwetting is simply due to their bodies not yet being mature enough to sense that they need to go to the toilet or potty. The key theme to deal with bed wetting is don't panic and try to stay calm and relaxed. Gaining bladder control at night time is usually a gradual process, it takes time and can come in fits and starts. Bed wetting is also known as enuresis. Primary Nocturnal Enuresis is when the bed is wet every night and Secondary Nocturnal Enuresis is when a child has accidentally wet the bed having been dry for six or more months. Sometimes a child is dry for months and then returns to bed wetting - possibly triggered by stress or changes in his sleep habits. The best thing you can do is to support your child and make the process of coping with a wet bed as easy as possible for yourself and your toddler until he is dry at night. - 25% of four year olds wet the bed
- 15% of five year olds wet the bed
- Up to the age of five bed wetting is usually considered normal
- 85% to 90% of children by the age of 5 or 6 years stop wetting the bed on their own
- 2% of adolescents still wet the bed at 15 years old
- It also seems to affect boys more than girls
Toddler bed wetting at some point during your child's toddler years is almost inevitable. Learning to stay dry during the night usually takes longer than staying dry during the day. So firstly do not attempt putting your toddler in bed without a nappy on until he is totally secure in being dry during the day. Remember that there is no rush to being dry at night time and if you do put pressure on your toddler then it is likely to make bedwetting more likely. Toddler bed wetting is very common and to be expected during the toddler years. You cannot hurry toilet training during the day or night and your toddler will learn when they are developmentally ready.
