Toddler Games:
For Ages 1 - 2

Toddler games for children aged 1 - 2 are simple and whilst your toddler is playing, he will also be developing his skills in all areas. Here are some games for your to try.

Toddlers Games: Peek-A-Boo

Children love hiding and you finding them. It's like a magic trick for them! Make a big fuss over finding them. Your child hides, perhaps behind a curtain, or under a blanket. You say "Where are you?" and play along with it, even though you know where they are. "Are you under the chair?", "Are you behind the sofa?" When you think you've guessed enough places then go to where your child is hiding and say things like "What's this?" whilst you are feeling his head or tickling his foot. He'll love it and think it's the best game ever. It's so sweet to see and you'll both end up laughing.

If you hide, make it very, very easy! Poke your foot out, stick an arm out and let your child easily find you.

Toddler Games: Make A Band

Most young children love making music and noises and this is best done with a small group of children. Make an orchestra from simple percussion instruments, such as maracas (you can make your own), drums (saucepans are fine), whistles (recorders), any electric keyboard (or piano). Let your child be free with making a noise and let them do what they like. You could also adapt it to be a bit more structured e.g. everyone making a quiet sound, then everyone making a really loud sound, making the sound of different animals e.g. mouse, elephant, lion.

For older children you can also let them "conduct" so that they can start and stop the music and indicate whether the music should be loud or quiet.

Toddler Games: Dance

Children often love to dance. Put on different styles of music and dance with your child. Also, lift them up and dance whilst you hold them. They'll love being spun around, jiggled about and dipped down to the beat of the music. It's very good exercise for you too!

Toddler Games: Making Hats

Children often love wearing their own hat. To make a hat together is really simple. Use quite thick cardboard and roll it keeping a point at one end and fix it with sticky tape. This will make a wizard's hat and you can then decorate it with shiny things or ribbons or whatever takes your fancy. Your toddler is likely to love it. You might need some elastic to keep the hat from falling off a lot.

Toddler Games: Drawing

Children love to be free to create their own pictures. Always have paper free to hand and crayons, pencils or washable felt tips. Sit down and draw next to your toddler too. You can ask your toddler what he would like you to draw and as you draw it (however basic it is) he will be delighted at the magic that what he wanted has just appeared.

Let your toddler be free with drawing and congratulate him on whatever he has done. His drawing of a duck may look just like a scribble to you, but to your toddler, it's a beautiful duck, so be sure to praise your toddler and let him take pride in his achievements.

Toddler Games: Outdoor games

Kicking a ball around the park or garden is always a hit. Catching a large beachball too is a great game. Gross motor skills need to be practiced in order to develop so try and spend time just playing with a ball, chasing it around the park, throwing it high in the air and generally having fun with it. You don't need any ball skills to play ball with your toddler - just have fun and help your toddler to kick and catch and throw.

Have fun and enjoy!
