Toddler pillows are popular with parents and children because they are adapted to be comfy for a little body and can also act as a toddler comforter. When to introduce a pillow: The general guidance is that pillows can be used for children over the age of 2. However, we suggest that before using one, check with your paediatrician or health visitor to confirm that using a pillow will be safe in case of any allergies that your child may have or to advise you on any revised safety recommendations. Children under the age of 2, or very small children, may be at risk of suffocation. Pillows can sometimes help when young children have ear infections or sinus problems as the pillow props the head upwards and can help relieve the pain. Again, check with your medical professional. Sometimes your child will make it clear when she wants a pillow - you might find her resting her head on her teddy or comforter. Or she'll want to be like her older sibling and want a pillow. If your child has slept in your family bed then she may want a pillow when they move into her own bed as she had one with Mummy and Daddy. It can be introduced as another exciting step in growing up and something which will add to the whole idea that going to bed can be a happy time. Travelling
Pillows can very useful for helping your toddler find travelling and sleeping away from home more comfortable. Most hotels or other people's houses have adult sized pillows for everyone so bringing your own familiar pillow can help your toddler be secure and cosy. Anything that helps your little one sleep well away from home is a great bonus after everyone has had a tiring day travelling. Size: Pillows specifically for toddlers are smaller and firmer than adult sized pillows: around 12" x 16" and 3" thick. The average adult sized pillow is too large for your child's body whereas a toddler pillow is designed to support your child's neck, head and shoulders. Pillow Cases:Pillow cases can be 100% cotton flannel,100% woven cotton (non-flannel),100% cotton sateen and satin charmeuse. The covers can come in many different patterns, themes and colours. You can also personalise the pillow cover by having your child's name embroidered on it. Pillow Inserts:The pillow inserts can be made from 100% polyester non-allergenic polyfill. Pillows made from down feathers are also available though beware of any allergic reaction or triggers (check with your medical professional). Posture Pillows:Toddler pillows made from hypoallergenic foam are available from Toys R Us. These have been designed by a chiropractor and are aimed to promote a healthy posture by correctly aligning the spine and neck. It comes with a removable and washable cover. These don't quite have the sweet or fun factor though if this is the pillow of your choice then you could personalise it by sewing your child's name on the cover or adding embellishments. As before, check with your medical professional. Toddler pillows are the right size for a child's body and can really make the difference in helping your little one sleep. Sleep for her, sleep for you!
