Here's some general parenting tips to cope with potty training:- Be watchful and notice the signs
- Be prepared with the right gear. Let your toddler choose some of the gear so that he or she can be involved.
- Praise every success with treats - stickers are great. Never shame your child because he has done an accident.
- If it isn't working stop, your toddler isn't ready.
- Don't make a fuss when an accident happens. Just clear up and continue with your day. All in all it's not a big deal, it's just a bit of a nuisance to clear up.
- Potty or toilet seat? See what your toddler likes.
- Always bring an extra set of clothes with you (two if you're nervous)!
- If your toddler sees you going to the toilet he or she is much more likely to want to copy you.
- Let your toddler completely master day time potty training before embarking on night time potty training.
- If your toddler shows any fear of potty training then never ridicule him. Always treat his fears seriously. Let him flush the toilet for you and let him see what wee and poo look like. Fear is often fear of the unknown rather than the known.
- Relax about it. Most children manage potty training in the end - there isn't a big rush to succeed.
